In college I
took a couple of creative writing classes geared specifically towards poetry
and poetic analysis. I generally find the subject of poetry is not
well-appreciated outside of certain demographics within the writing community,
and often early writers of literary fiction and prose may not appreciate how
much poetry, as a written art form, can benefit them.
Recently I read this article by one of my
favorite erotic authors, Tamsin Flowers. In it, she raises some very good
questions about the state of erotica, and the struggles erotic authors face.
Mainly, (to summarize), that our fiction, no matter how well-written, carries
with it the stigma of being little more than trashy, literary porn.
There are lots and lots of lists out there telling authors what to do and what not to do. Some of these cover marketing, querying, submitting manuscripts, editing...today I'm posting my own 5 Basic Rules for Writing (Anything). There's no order to these; I consider each of them highly important. If you are serious about writing, I highly, highly suggest you follow these guidelines.
