Friday Free Read: Rhythm and Blues

Rhythm and Blues takes place in the world of Blood and Fire, alongside my other supernatural erotic stories Lotus Petals, Angel's Keeping, and several other Free Reads on this blog. As a standalone, it can be read without prior knowledge of the other books, but if you've been following the Blood and Fire tales, I hope you'll enjoy another glimpse into their dark world.

I met my black-magic boy on the Mississippi River. There was a jazz festival in Memphis, a weekend's liberty, release from the ugly house in the backwoods smelling of whiskey and garbage. I hadn't told Frank I was going, and he'd throw a shit-fit when I got back. I let one of his bar buddies fuck me for fifty bucks and hitched my way to Memphis, stopping halfway over the Dolly Parton Bridge to lean over the railing, smelling the wild green-and-copper scent of the air.

At nineteen, I was already an irredeemably broken thing. If I tipped myself into the river, nobody would care except strangers to whom I was only an unnamed girl with so many mysteries.

Talking Shop: Bisexuality and Reflections in Romance

I read a blog recently about coming out as bisexual, and it got me thinking. I hadn't realized until recently there's such a controversy about bisexuals and their place in the LGBTQ spectrum. We seem to fall between the cracks when it comes to gay issues, maybe because we can "pass" for straight. There are those who feel bisexuals aren't truly BI-sexual, but straight and "confused", or gay and "pretending".

I've been fortunate in that I've never run up against biphobia in my own experience, but it saddens me to see it exists, just as much as any other phobia against the LGBTQ community. And of course, much like the other orientations and gender identifications on the spectrum, bisexuals are greatly under-represented or mis-represented in romantic fiction.

Talking Shop: Taking Matters Into Your Own Hands, Part 2 - Blogs

This week we're continuing our look at steps to increase your visibility and presence--your author "brand"--on social media in cyberspace. Last time we discussed the two most common social media platforms, Twitter and Facebook. Today, it's time to discuss:

Do you have to have a blog? Possibly not, but the benefits of having one far outweigh the "costs". Since most blog sites are free, you're mostly talking about time, effort, and upkeep when it comes to your investment in the blog.

Why is a blog important for indie authors?

Friday Free Read: Honey, I'm Home

“Honey?”

I kicked the front door shut behind me, juggling my jacket and purse and shuffling the mail in my hands.  The dog yipped over my arrival, jumping up at my feet and panting with glee until I managed to free myself from the jumbled chaos enough to scratch behind her ears.

“Hon, are you home yet?” I called out.

“In the bedroom,” Ryan called back.  I put down my coat and bag, shuffled through the last few articles of mail before tossing aside the coupons, examining the telephone bill as I made my way down the hallway, removing the clip in my hair with my free hand.

“I’ve been thinking of upgrading to the cable bundle,” I muttered as I entered our master bedroom, still poring over the bill statement.  When I looked up, though, all thought of bills went out of my head.

Ryan lounged on the bed, naked except for an open button-up shirt.  He was patiently nursing a beautiful erection, grinning at me as I absorbed the sight of him, naughty and eager.

“I need sex,” he said simply.

Really?” I murmured, surprised.  He nodded, and I dropped the phone bill onto the dresser and crawled up on the bed next to him, kissing him with a giggle.
In a matter of minutes he had my shirt up, over my head, and was stripping off my bra as I wriggled out of my skirt.  When only my lacy panties were left he lay back, pulling me on top of him.  His cock was savagely hard as a gently rubbed the crotch of my panties against him, laughing happily.

“I love the… honesty, hon,” I murmured, leaning down to nibble his earlobe.  His hands ran down my back, to my buttocks, squeezing enthusiastically.  His raging erection pressed hard against me and I sat up again momentarily shimmy down my panties and kick them off.

“Shush,” he muttered between kisses.  “Sex.”

“Yes, sir."

His cock was full and hard as he slid it into me, and I uttered a quick gasp, lifting my hands up to my breasts and running my thumbs over my nipples.  Ry rocked me up and down, the slick, smooth feel of his cock invading me again and again.  I rode on it with a smile; he slipped his hands around my hips and bounced me on him—I cried out as I felt him deep inside.  I couldn’t believe how quickly the feel of his fucking got me wet and slick: just two minutes ago I had been wrapped up in my work clothes and thinking about the phone service, and now I was being practically split open by my husband’s hungry erection as I bounced up and down on him.

I leaned forward, wrapping my arms under Ryan’s neck and tilting his head up to kiss him as he thrust.  I squeezed my tits against his chest and he squeezed my ass hard, growling playfully.  He was hot, banging me hard, guiding me up and down on his ferociously demanding cock as I giggled and lavished attention on his  lips, running my tongue along his, nipping at him, moaning between kisses.

With a quick cry of pleasure I shot up again, riding hard, grinding down as my orgasm began to build.  Ry’s eager thrusting came faster now; he gripped my hips hard, moaning.

He came first, explosive and hard, the hot force of his climax throbbing deep in my pussy.  I ground my hips down on him as he pumped his cum into me, and he held me there, keeping me tight around his cock as it spurted stream after stream into my hot, wet sex.

When he was done, I rolled off of him, moaning as I lay on my back and stretched out my arms overhead in joy.  His come ran out of me and I pressed my thighs together to try and keep his hot semen inside me.

Ry rolled over, leaning on top of me and kissing me deeply.

“Thank you, baby,” he murmured.  “I’m sorry, I just needed sex.”

“It’s okay,” I giggled happily, taking his hand.  “But now, of course… you’re going to have to finish me.”

He smiled, and kissed me again.  Letting his hand stray down between my legs, he slipped two fingers into my dripping, quivering cunt.

Write an Opening Line.

Just an opening line. No more. No Less.

Make it something the will grab us and make us want more.

Something like:

"The first thing I remember is dying."

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hints and Tips:
.
Less is more, but give us enough to want even more.
Leave us with a question, a mystery, a tantalizing detail.
Give us a hint of what kind of story this opening line belongs to. Is it a romance? A mystery? A western? Think of what sort of details would give this away.
Talking Shop: Rape as a Plot Point
I think there is a phenomena in romantic fiction where sexual assault and rape equal an immediate and easy plot device.
Unfortunately, I can't say I'm innocent of this. While reviewing and editing Lotus Petals, I realized I, too, had included a scene implying intended forcible rape. As I analyzed why I had written this scene, I determined it existed solely to allow the romantic hero to ride in, save the day, and be rewarded for her good timing.  This, at least in my mind, is not the right motivation for including rape, implied rape, or abuse in a romance. The scene was edited before the final book was published, and I found myself much more satisfied with the results. I just can't get behind the use of sexual assault for convenient plot twists--even when I do it myself.
from the point of view of an inanimate object
Hints and Tips:
.
Think about where and why your inanimate object exists as it does.
What is your object able to witness? What is it able to interact with? A chair can be sat in, a radio is turned on or off.
Talking Shop: The Erotic Heritage Museum in Las Vegas
On the corner of Industrial Road and West Desert Inn Road in Las Vegas, behind the Trump International Towers, is the Harry Mohney's Erotic Heritage Museum.
The joint venture of a preacher and a pornographer, the museum is home to a variety of exhibits exploring the intricacies of sexuality in history, culture, and the individual. Inside, visitors find multiple galleries of erotic information: a portion of the upstairs dedicated to erotic artwork; a "Wall of Shame" outlining the history of attacks on the first-amendment rights in relation to "obscenity"; infographics on different facets of contemporary sexual issues like sexting and long-distance relationships; and even a screening of what is believed to be the oldest pornographic film on record: A Free Ride, 1915.
Friday Free Read: La Galerie Bleu
Dania had waited months for La Galerie Bleu to re-open its doors. Months, while the elegant old maison underwent a long-awaited renovation. Yes, at the time, Dania had supported the closure, agreeing with the other patrons that the place could use a fresh coat of paint, a new polish. The building was a little old and sometimes even a bit drafty; the remnant of a grander, more decadent time. What she couldn't have known was how much she'd crave to go back once those doors were closed, how much she'd think about the familiar comfort and escape into its roomy shows. Her Friday nights turned empty and slow, and when she had a date she had to take them elsewhere, and it was always disappointing.
La Galerie's renovation ought to have been completed in fourteen weeks. Then there were complications. Then there were delays, and a smattering of protests by neighboring businesses over "appropriate use" of the property. Fourteen weeks eventually became six months, and Dania didn't realize she could start to crave the place like an addict craves a fix.
