New Week, New Creative Writing Challenge: Straight from the Headlines!

Hello, My Lovelies!

I do so love sharing these writing challenges with you. I love to read the responses you share back! Today I'm going to pose a variant of one I was given in one of my own creative writing courses: "Straight From the Headlines".

Watch out, darlings... this one's a bit of a tough one!

For this exercise I've chosen the following five headlines:

• Runway for Scholars fashion show set for Sunday

• Everybody from Aristotle to Disney gets hyenas wrong

• Proposed initiative could ban all marijuana use in Montana

• Leopard strays into Ballarpur, injurs three

• Navy shifts watches to aid sleep on subs

 

 Your challenge is to pick one of these and write a sexy flash about it. The headline is your jumping off point--no need to go look up the real news post and pull true facts. For example, the first headline might inspire you to write a quick, sexy scene set backstage of the fashion show.

 

I think that's fairly self-explanatory? You can post your response in the comments or link to your own Facebook or blog to show me what you've got! 

Just like last time, if we get ten or more entries, I'll choose the most creative one and give them a free prize! I've still got a few sexy e-books to give away and they're sitting all lonely in my virtual bookshelf, looking for a home!

Ravaged Blog Tour, Day 1: A Review of "Witchy Wolf", by Leona Bushman

Leona Bushman won me over last year with her zombie novella, Slow Burn.  This year, she leads the charge in Ravaged with the anthology's first, very sweet, short story, Witchy Wolf.

If you enjoy the Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole, you'll love Witchy Wolf.  Immediately I felt the tug of that modern fantasy kissed by ancient myth and the magic of the old world.  The story follows a young witch named Sabrina (isn't that always the best name for a witch?), making her traditional walkabout to meet her coven at Stonehenge. Sabrina's carrying a secret this year, though... something of which she is certain the coven Mother will not approve.

Along the way she runs into Treyan, a handsome man with a secret of his own: he's a werewolf, and on an errand from his pack leader. He can sense something different about the witch, though, and so he finds himself lured away from his deed to find out what about it is so alluring to his lupine senses.

This story carried the sparkle of urban fantasy magic, witches and werewolves traveling back to their roots in the midst of a modern tourist attraction, playing rugby and craving Coca Cola in the midst of ancient tradition. It makes the characters playful and loveable, as well as helps us identify. It also weaves ribbons of supernatural beauty throughout, taking us through the mysterious monoliths of Stonehenge to a coven's rite at Avebury.  The juxtaposition is clever and fun.  It's a quick little read but its great to settle down with right before bed, if you want a smile and a laugh and a sexy little sojourn into the night.

Help me to Celebrate, My Lovelies! Design My Tattoo!

I have a very special tradition, my lovelies: when a book I've written finds a home, I commemorate the occasion with a tattoo.  My first was a cross on my left shoulder blade, in honor of the first book I ever finished (a story about finding faith); my second is an arrangement of Nordic runes, the Hero, the Thorn, and Tempered Strength, in honor of my first series being considered by DAW books.  Now, with Lotus Petals ready to make its debut, it's time to celebrate again, with a brand new tattoo!

The tradition for me is to make the tattoo reflective of the story. In this case, I want a version of the tattoo on Rhiannon, my hero, who is a member of the Guild of Orchalyva, the weaponsmasters.  Here is the description straight from Lotus Petals:

On her left shoulder blade, she wore the savage black tattoo, the image of a double-headed axe ringed by weaving knotwork patterns. The ring grew narrower at the top, wider and more intricate at the bottom, like a circlet, a royal diadem around the warrior’s blade. Along the bottom of the design read a short inscription in the Greek language—Aijyn recognized the characters from engravings and artwork the daimyo and his samurai sometimes collected. Orgí kai chályva, the creed of the weapons-masters: "rage" and "steel".

  
Here is my challenge to you, my lovelies: help me commemorate the release of Lotus Petals and become part of the tradition. If you are artistic, like to design tattoos, or just want a chance to win a free copy of the book, send me a tattoo design that will incorporate the elements of Rhiannon's tattoo above.  They don't have to be arranged the same way as described, but the key elements -- the labrys (axe), the Greek phrase, the diadem -- should all be included.  Fonts, designs, knotwork if you want to include it, are all at your leisure to design. Though Rhiannon wears her tattoo on her left shoulder blade, I've already got a tattoo there, so this one will be going on my right ankle.  Design it however you like: as a single image, as an "anklet", or any other creative design.  My tattoos are generally small, so something roughly 3x3 (think a standard Post-It Note) would be best. I would consider larger, if the design is worth it.  One thing to note: lettering on a tattoo can only be so small, and my tattoo artist won't do it if he thinks the letters will bleed together.

Lotus Petals is set to be released on Friday, January 17th; I'll be at the tattoo parlor on Saturday, getting the celebratory ink!  Submit your designs to me at Brantwijn at gmail dot com, by January 10th extended to January 16th!, for a chance to win a free copy of Lotus Petals on the day it is released. I'll post all the designs here to share them with the world, and one lucky winner will be announced.  If you help spread the word, you might have a chance to win some other free books from me, too!
