Tour Day: Decadent Kane Brings Us Traces of Poppy

Decadent Kane is a very special colleague of mine and I'm elated to have her on the blog today. Traces of Poppy is a book I've long awaited, and as a special bonus, I had the honor of creating the cover art for this wonderful addition to Kane's Trouble With Elves. A woman I consistently find myself pitching ideas with, bouncing plot bunnies back and forth, Decadent's an indie paranormal romance author with a pen name taken from a burlesque name generator and began her career on a dare.

The fae, magic, and mystical worlds of possibility are carved into her soul. When she writes her stories, she pours all of her heart into what they whisper. She's the kind of lady who will stare off into space to better understand her characters thoughts, listening to them speak their own version of the story.

She's a mother of two girls and several furbabies. She's engaged but has no intention of getting married.  Like most authors she's been writing most of her life and has dreamed of being an author since the 5th grade. When she writes, she writes to explore characters and a world first for herself. Then she revises, edits and publishes for readers. Today, she brings us her thoughts on being:

A Taste of Something Decadent: Foreplay and Fangs Interviews Decadent Kane

Two days ago, Foreplay and Fangs hosted a very good friend of mine and fellow Breathless Press author, Decadent Kane. She is the mind behind The Trouble with Elves, a 3-book series so far, with more to come along. She's also a whiz with clever marketing and promo materials, and you may have seen some of her art on my page before! For an hour, guests posted their questions for Decadent to answer.  Here is what she said!

Decadent Kane Thanks so much for having me here! I'm looking forward to all the strange that can come from this...

Foreplay and Fangs Supernatural Romance Tell us one thing, anything, about Steele Your Soul, your newest book, that you really, really want your readers to know.

Decadent Kane The main thing I can think of for Steele Your Soul- is Joren- he always has lust on the brain...some nights he kept me awake with his little fantasies. He was also the hardest character for me to write- Pirate speak wasn't so easy....

Foreplay and Fangs :Your stories go between the points of view of your lead male and female. Do you find one perspective easier than the other, in terms of gender?

Decadent Kane I think it depends on the story. In the first book, Ribbon of Darkness, it was easier to write Ribbon's point of view than it was to write Draven's. In Tempting Clover I actually had a ton of fun with both point of views- the characters talked to me easily as I wrote and they stayed pretty even as things go.Steele Your Soul- Joren by far was the talker...his Point of view was easier- not his dialogue- but definitely his thoughts, ideas, and the rest of him...ahem.

Foreplay and Fangs Where do you draw your "inspiration" for elves? Is there a specific lore or mythos you follow or have you created your own kind of elves?

Decadent Kane I'm not going to say I have created a purely unique my own kind of elves. But I don't draw from anything in particular either. I just took general knowledge about elves, pointed ears, Drows are evil or darker version who live underground, and manipulated it to fit my ideas. Elves become drows through a disease called the feral. It lives in every elf. Elves reach full maturity when their ears have grown into a point. The feral can be reversed or held at bay- but only through very special means and it is different for every elf. I didn't want to take from a certain myth or fantasy of another- though in fairness no idea is completely original.

Tempting Clover: The Trouble With Elves, Book 2Foreplay and Fangs  You had a short work-in-progress called Demon Song. Any plans to expand this into a full story? What can you tell us about it?

Decadent Kane Ah- Demon Song... that is completely different than my elves. Like the title suggest it has more to do with demons. I have considered breaching out into the world of demons. This particular story will be submitted to my editor as a 'flirt' a little taste of how I write and what I write. If I do follow this idea into Demon's much like my elves, I will take general ideas of the creatures and make it fit my own imagination and writing style. I already have one published demon story called Butterfly in the Bloody Valentine anthology by Breathless Press

Guest Do you have a favorite out of your characters? ?

Decadent Kane A favorite... *whispers* don't tell anyone- but Joren is my favorite...He's such a cad and come on he looks like Killian Jones....*swoons*

Guest How often do your characters wake you up just so they can talk to you??

Decadent Kane Oh goodness! Way more than I'd like sometimes. The males are the worst. Strangely enough my female characters don't keep me awake or wake me. In total it's happened about 6 times.

Guest: Will we get to see Pirate Captain again? *please please please?

Decadent Kane You know- I haven't decided yet. Several people have commented about wanting more of him. And When i write the Drow King's story- he might find his way involved somehow...but I don't have anything planned right this second.

Brantwijn's Best of Blogs: Decadent Kane

Decadent KaneDecadent Kane is a bit of a blogging mentor to me.  She's introduced me to the Thursday Tasters and Friday Flashers, and been a faithful follower with many helpful suggestions at the ready.

As for her blog, besides being beautiful, she posts regularly with some very sexy snippets of her elvyn stories, which are cute and sensual.  While working on Goblin Fires, I've occasionally slipped away to her world for a little taste of style.

At the moment, Decadent is taking part in the A-Z Challenge, putting up a clever "Wicked Whisper" every day for a new letter of the alphabet.  There's been a lot of smoldering graphics and beautiful men gracing her pages these last few weeks.  Decadent is also a pretty neat hand at creating these sorts of graphics, as well, and she's generously put together lovely little postable pics for myself and other authors to celebrate our upcoming releases. These are two she's created for me recently.

Decadent is an author of fantasy erotic romance as well.  You can read my reviews of her first two releases, Ribbon of Darkness and Tempting Clover, here on the blog.  She's got an upcoming release I am also extremely excited for, Steele Your Soul.

Drop by Decadent's Blog and check her out.  She's fun, friendly, creative and devoted to some very sexy, very beautiful content.  Beyond being exceptionally talented and exhibiting a lot of great works of her own, she's faithfully dedicated to supporting fellow small press authors and bloggers herself, which makes her a very good neighbor on top of everything else.

New Review: "Tempting Clover", by Decadent Kane

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmprczKitschwB_sGxDHdVNutpH9M3-GJco_IXhdldS2aP3ToDqJmK7ddvSBiEBig-718Q80O3Xs2-601vhKHFy1cg3ku5qY4vrBtOVcj6pIC4G75yTSC52ADNb6pz1RJ969BNNG15n_Q/s1600/TemptingCloven453x680.jpg

By now, I've had the pleasure to read a few of Decadent Kane's Trouble With Elves series (some of them even before release! Neener neener neener.)  Tempting Clover, Kane's newest novella, has quickly become my favorite.

Clover is an elfess with a problem: the goblin Malik has tricked her into a contract, wherein she is doomed to be returned to him every time an enticing male gets her feeling hot and heavy--and always before any fun can come of it!  Malik collects her "sexual essence" to turn into a potion which will make him human, long enough for him to go out and score a hot date with a lady.  How ridiculously unfair.

But Tempting Clover is not some sort of "odd couple" comedy. The story takes a quick turn towards the promising elvish bartender, Reed, who may be the first man Clover simply cannot imagine skipping out on in those final moments of heat, and then another quick turn into the dark and dangerous territory of navigating a counterspell behind Malik's back, to free herself for good.

I found this story to be one of the most compelling Kane has written. The chemistry between Reed and Clover is dynamic and very effective: I don't normally go for true love matches in a short novella, because so often they rely on a poorly-forged "instant" connection to justify them as soul mates. For Reed and Clover, though, there is no deus ex machina to use as an excuse: they have a rather whirlwind turnabout from competitive denial into want and passion, but it travels along some very relatable and endearing lines. I found myself very invested in their happy ending, and even more hateful of the villain Malik, because he stood in their way.

My one complaint about Kane's writing is that I always want it to be a bit longer. I do enjoy a "quick read" now and again, The Trouble With Elves feels so rich already, I'm often yearning to see a fleshing out of some of the world's more creative and interesting features. In Tempting Clover, I yearned for more time with the characters: Reed and Clover are just such a loveable pair, with an excellent dash of contrast and a gruff but beautiful affection.

Not only Reed and Clover, but Malik and the fourth featured character, Idis the Sage Witch, are such dynamic creatures. You love and hate them with a real enjoyment. None of them is stale or lacking in dimension.

I give Tempting Clover an enthusiastic five stars, and must say it is one of the most satisfying short love stories I've run across in the genre. I'm eager to see more coming along in this series, but I'd love to see a continuation of these two and their unfolding passions.
